History of eCommerce in Ghana

eCommerce

eCommerce in the early days was started by Michael Aldrich

Michael Aldrich (22 August 1941 – 19 May 2014) was an English inventor, innovator, and entrepreneur. In 1979 he invented online shopping to enable online transaction processing between consumers and businesses, or between one business and another, a technique known later as e-commerce.

Today there are quite a number of eCommerce platforms over the world and even here in Ghana.

Quoting an article published by wopedigital.com, the first-ever eCommerce website in Ghana was eshopafrica.com. It was founded by a lovely English lady called Cordelia Salter-Nour in 1999, with the website launching officially in February of 2001.

The site dealt in products mostly manufactured in Ghana like baskets, carvings, jewelry, kente cloth, and collectibles. They received lots of  international coverage, especially due to the unique and unusual coffins they displayed and sold from their website.

Whilst it’s easy to set up an eCommerce website in just about 24 hours today, everything 20 years ago was much more difficult and much more expensive.

Actinic Software Ltd. (acquired by Oxatis S.A) provided the eCommerce software for eShopAfrica.com as of 2005.

They accepted Visa and MasterCard payments via WorldPay and PayPal. Because Africa was and still is considered a high-risk location, they had to pay higher transaction charges to accept card payments. Deliveries were done in partnership with DHL.

Cordelia spoke at AITEC (African Information & Communication Technology Exhibition & Conference) in May 2003 on the topic “eCommerce in Africa – Making it Happen”

It’s a terrific overview of the eCommerce industry and the problems they faced almost two decades ago. Sadly, a lot of the problems she states are still yet to be solved.

Since then, many other eCommerce sites, have come and gone with new ones launching regularly. Past players include shopafrica53.com, afrochiconline.com, africaretail.com, tisu.com.gh, ahonya.com, and mogoogi.com.

Current players include jumia.com.gh, superprice.com, kikuu.com.gh, melcomonline.com, zoobashop.com, and a lot more.

Key Factors When Building An eCommerce Website

Starting an eCommerce website or presence here in Ghana requires a broad array of essentials. We know about eCommerce, types of eCommerce, and some web design agencies and freelancers from previous blog posts. (If you have not read them, follow the links in this post)

The main factors to consider when developing an e-commerce presence are PLATFORMSDESIGNSECURITYSEO ARCHITECTUREPAIN POINTS, and SITE SPEED. These are the main areas where decisions will need to be made in order to develop a successful e-commerce presence. Whereas some of these factors are self-explanatory, we would dive into the more complex factors.

Platforms
Before creating your eCommerce website, you need to decide which platform to create the website on. There are a variety of content management systems including WordPress, Joomla, and Magento.

Design
When designing your website, use a clean, simple design rather than one with too many graphics and incorporate a clear call to action buttons.

Another thing to take into account is whether you want to create your own custom theme or choose a preselected theme and build upon it. Although it can be pricier, a custom theme allows you to add custom functionality to your website that a standard pre-made theme may not have. In contrast, pre-made themes will be much cheaper or in most cases free.

Your website design should also be responsive so that your website can be viewed correctly across multiple platforms and operating systems.

Security
A secure website is beneficial for both you and your customers. With a growing number of websites being hacked and data being stolen, security is the one part of a website you cannot skip out on.

SEO
If you want potential customers to see your products before that of competitors then optimizing your website pages will aid in trying to be on the first page of search results.

Undertake keyword research to get the words that potential customers are most commonly using to find the products you offer. Google’s keyword planner is quite helpful in managing your keyword research. You can then add relevant words to your product names and descriptions. Revisit these keywords occasionally to update them and experiment with which keywords work better. There are other factors to also consider as well but these for us are very key and take precedence over others.

eCommerce Key Factors

Ecommerce Web Design

Now you know the types of eCommerce being operated here in Ghana, the benefits, and how good it is to have one to grow your business.

There are a number of things to consider when building your eCommerce website.

Building a website is much easier and cheaper than it used to be thanks to the wide variety of user-friendly, web builders that consumers can now choose from.

When choosing a website builder, you must first consider what kind of site you want to build, the look and feel, and what kind of functionality you require.

Some Website builders you might want to consider include

  • WordPress

WordPress

  • Wix

Wix

  • Squarespace

  • Site123

Are these worth it for starters?

If you just want to build a basic site without an online store, then a free website builder is a solid way to get started. Bear in mind that free plans come with less storage, slower load times, and fewer SEO and marketing tools. If you know that you need Ecommerce facilities, lots of storage space (for high-resolution images, videos, etc.), extra customer support, and/or a lot of webpages, then you need the guidance of a design agency or experienced freelancer

Design Agencies or EXPERIENCED Freelancers (emphasis on experienced) are the go to’s for a more complex website, eCommerce functionalities, and also for high-end resolution images. They offer web design services for a variety of visual mediums, including print and digital.
